Last month, UC San Diego’s inaugural Catan team made their competitive debut at the Anaheim Regional National Pre-Qualifier Semifinal. “Competitive Catan is a mysterious world,” said Club President Kai Chen. “We’re extremely thankful we were able to negotiate our way in.” The players were initially denied entry by security, who had been instructed to not allow anyone inside “who seemed to have bathed recently,” or were under the age of 36.
Once making it inside, the team was confronted by their next obstacle: “We had trained to play on a regulation spiral board setup,” said secondstring player Cole Porter, “but our tournament host actually uses a non-regulation setup. Colonist.io did not prepare us for this.” The team stated “they were flabbergasted and caught unaware” upon floundering in the first round, putting up a 10/9/4/6/6 line. After the second round, Team Captain Chen was severely injured in an altercation between two players at his table. “Everyone at Catan Club UCSD commends him for his selfless actions in breaking up the fight.”
When asked about the match’s outcome, club member Jai Rajput said, “I’m proud of the effort my players put in. We might not have qualified for the National PreQualifier Regional Eliminator, but we’ll be back — and better — next year.”
