In honor of National LGBTQIA+ History Month, UC San Diego announced that the institution formally known as Sixth College will “henceforth be dubbed ‘RuPaul Andre Charles College’,” according to a press release from UC Regents.
This unprecedented change follows the iconic drag queen’s sizable $20 million donation to the university — approximately one quarter of the “Drag Race” host’s net worth. Following the donation, the TV personality took to the social media platform X, Xeeting, “Maybe now, they’ll have the budget to paint over that awful orange! Like living inside of a post-modern cheeto — What a DRAG!” Since that post, neither RuPaul nor his team have made further comments.
Chancellor Pradeep Khosla offered insight into the change: “As a lifelong fan of Drag Race, and of Ru herself, I wholeheartedly support and endorse the decision to acknowledge the work they have done for the… LBLTQ community.”
On campus, reviews have been mixed. “Tea slay boots the house downnn hunty!” said student Britney Line, self-proclaimed fan of “season seven ‘Drag Race’ TikToks.” Others were less enthused. “Personally, I don’t really get the change. But, as long as I don’t have to take another DEI course, I don’t really care,” confessed third-year Brody Guy. Faculty opinions are also split, with 37% of the surveyed staff simply responding, “Who?”
In addition to renaming the college, Chancellor Khosla promises “even bigger changes” coming in the near future. The new RuPaul College, referred to colloquially as “RPC,” already boasts several alterations to university curriculum. Khosla recently announced the addition of a mandatory course on “The Art of Tucking” to the already extensive general education requirements of the college, as well as several supplementary courses such as “Intro to Fierceness,” “Queening Out 101,” and a class titled “Slay,” which has not yet released a curriculum. This change is accompanied by plans to remove all urinals from men’s restrooms in the college. Khosla explained, “We will pee sitting down. In solidarity.”
Additionally, Khosla unveiled plans to erect a twenty-two foot tall bronze statue of RuPaul in full drag in front of Jeannie lecture hall, purported by UCSD officials to “parallel the deeply moving statue of Sojourner Truth situated in Marshall College.” The statue is scheduled to be revealed in June 2025. The inscription on the plaque reads “Fiercer than fierce, slayer than slay — all hail RuPaul, the Qu/King of Gay.”
