Owing to record low engagement between students, the industry partners of UC San Diego, and its hiring partner Handshake; the two groups are unveiling an initiative to boost student employment. According to John Kerrby, director of the UCSD Career Center, the collaboration, titled the “Career Institute for Academics,” aims to capture the portion of the student body not moved by typical employment promises, and bring them into the Handshake ecosystem.
The program is expanding from typical offerings, and instead is offering new workshops such as “Government Opportunities” and “Employer Loyalty.” Additionally, their website offers more digestible formats such as their “Which Industrial Complex Am I?” quiz, and a blog written by Handshake alum @no1jarheadfan. As listed on the UCSD Career Center webpage, these resources seek to bridge the gap preventing students from accessing the ample opportunities offered on Handshake. When pressed on the opportunities offered by the Career Institute for Academics, Kerrby had only the following to say: “Remember students, the CIA is hiring!”
