Following a Fall quarter in which they took 22 units and worked part-time, third-year student Jo Slaque reported having “lost” a week eating home-cooked meals, walking their dog, and sleeping eight to nine hours a night.

When asked about their break during an icebreaker activity for one of their classes, Slaque stated that they did “nothing,” and appeared “somber” according to their classmates. “I don’t know what came over me,” said Slaque. “I was gonna update my resume, get some more certifications, and at least get a head start on the five classes I’m taking this quarter, but I didn’t do any of that.”

Instead, Slaque reportedly spent most of the time “snuggled up in bed” and dedicated “three entire days” to binge-watching the new season of their favorite reality TV show with their dog Barth. “Barth was happy,” Slaque said. “And so was I, I guess. But the whole week just flew by. I really should have been more productive.”

Despite their regret over the lost week, Slaque admitted to having experienced “fleeting moments of genuine contentment.” They recounted, “There was this one afternoon, I made pancakes from scratch. Eggs, flour, milk, the juiciest blueberries, the whole deal.” Slaque stared off into the distance. “I sprinkled them with powdered sugar and everything, then drowned them in syrup. They were so good. I almost cried.”

“I can’t remember the last time I cooked for fun like that,” Slaque continued, drifting into silence for a moment before letting out a sigh. “Thinking about all the side projects I didn’t do ruins it a little, though.”

Slaque wasn’t alone in this sentiment. Fourth-year Jim Bough shared a similar experience from the break. “I had this whole plan to catch up on my portfolio and deploy my personal website,” he said, shaking his head. “But instead, I spent half the break playing Marvel Rivals with my friends and reorganizing my record collection. Totally dropped the ball.”

Bough also reported that he went on a “rare” fishing trip with his father and played cards for hours with his grandparents when they flew over for Christmas dinner, but declined to count these as “having done anything.”

With the Winter quarter in full swing, both Slaque and Bough have reportedly set new goals to make up for the time they lost, in addition to the work they did not achieve over break. These goals include picking up a second major, starting a dropshipping business, and eating at least one meal a day, though they reported that the last one might be “a bit too ambitious.”
