Yesterday, the Dean of Undergraduate Education announced that all UC San Diego students are required to take a new class, SIO 154: Sunsetology. “Recently I’ve noticed that all the students I’ve been meeting with are very depressed,” said Dean Robert Ross. “I think the problem is that all of these kids haven’t been outside in the sun for months because they’re busy doing homework and studying for classes. That’s why I’ve decided to introduce SIO 154 as a requirement to graduate, ensuring that every student gets an adequate amount of sunlight and sees some of La Jolla’s beautiful skies for at least one quarter during their four years here.”
Students were ambivalent about Ross’ announcement. “Sure, in theory, it would be great to go outside and it would be nice to finally be able to tell people what a sunset over the ocean looks like,” said third-year Sol Ezarri. “But having to take all the prereqs for SIO 154 is going to put me two years behind schedule, and I really don’t want to spend six years here. If I want to graduate in a timely manner, I’m going to have to take six classes a quarter — next spring, I guess I won’t be sleeping so that I can stargaze for SIO 43.”
