Due to the reduction in UC San Diego’s budget, some students have begun to worry about the school’s lifespan. Motivated by these fears, a few “enthusiastic” students have decided to form an idol group, raising money for UCSD through song-and-dance performances.

The group calls themselves Hard Life, in reference to the consequences of the university’s academic rigor, student idols staged an impromptu debut performance in the middle of a CSE 101 midterm. The set included covers of famous J-pop idol songs, as well as two original songs, “Let Me Live in Sixth Next Year” and “I Love King Triton”.

“We need to save our school!” the leader of Hard Life exclaimed during the emcee portion, “We can’t just let it close!” According to the group’s website, all proceeds from Hard Life’s performances will be donated to UCSD to “fund the school’s continued presence.”

When asked about the optics of having a group of students raise money for the school themselves, Chancellor Pradeep Khosla responded, “It’s wonderful that students value me — I mean, our school. Even if we’re entirely capable of raising funding ourselves.”

Hard Life’s debut album, What Is My LIFE, comes out in August, in honor of Chancellor Khosla’s birthday.
